Serving Others through Public and Private Programs Alternatives to Violence is a ministry to young people and adults to educate them in lifelong peaceful skills to handle conflict, deal with adversity and maintain peace and serenity. It is sponsored by Peace Grows Inc. and the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Education provides ministry to the poor through its service in the heart of the city. This is done through the presence of our sisters at the long established Millcreek Children's Center (www.millcreekchildrenscenter.org) and the newly formed Youngstown Community School. Each of these provides a safe and loving environment for children of the working poor whose parents are in job training, going to school or employed at a minimum wage with no benefits. Ursuline education in the city develops Christian attitudes through example and the teaching of values. Pastoral Ministry is offered in the area hospitals and hospice programs. The sisters involved in this ministry offer prayer support and spiritual companionship for those who are ill and their families. Prison Ministry provides visitation to the incarcerated through Bible study, shared prayer, course work, formal religious services, religious instruction and friendly visits with individuals or groups inside or families outside of prison. |
