Our Sister Marie Helene Chismar, OSU died on Wednesday June 20. She was 91.
 
She was born Helen Chismar on April 10, 1921, in Donora, Pa, the daughter of Stephen and Anna Luther Chismar and moved to Youngstown as a child. She attended SS. Cyril & Methodius School and graduated from The Rayen School in 1939. She entered the Ursuline Sisters on February 1, 1947 and professed perpetual vows on August 13, 1952.
 

Sister Marie Helene earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Youngstown State University in 1955, a Master of Arts Degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Notre Dame in 1963, and a Ph. D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University in 1971. In addition, she did post-graduate work at St. John College, Cleveland, the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, the University of Nebraska, and Walsh University, North Canton.

 

In her 50 years of active ministry, Sister Marie Helene taught at a variety of Catholic Schools and served various church ministries including St. Ann and SS. Cyril & Methodius, Youngstown, St. Peter Interparish School, Washington, DC, and the Ursuline Preschool & Kindergarten. In the 1960s Sister Marie Helene worked in the Catholic Schools Office for the Diocese of Youngstown as Supervisor of elementary teachers and Director of In-Service Development of Teachers. In 1966 she joined the faculty of Walsh University in elementary teacher education, a position she held until 1983.

 

Since her retirement in 2006, Sister Marie Helene has remained active in service at the Motherhouse, most recently praying for the needs of the church and the world. She was always interested in children and educational methods, her extended family and global issues, especially ecology.

 

Sister Marie Helene leaves her Sisters in the Ursuline Community, a sister-in-law, Mildred Chismar in Youngstown and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Genevieve Chismar Deley, and three brothers, Martin, Stephen, and John.

 

Funeral services will be held at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Rd., Canfield. Calling hours are begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
 

Like all Ursulines, Sister Marie Helene devoted her entire life to the glory of God. Soli Deo Gloria.
