And though there is a man like Santa Claus called Papa Natale, who brings Italian children a few small gifts on Dec. 25, Jan. 6 is the bigger holiday for Italians. "The 12 days of Christmas are bigger on the more spiritual meaning of Christmas,", which is why the country's main celebration is on the 12th day after Christmas, the day Jesus Christ was revealed as the son of God. And instead of cookies and milk like American children leave for Santa, my dad would leave something a little stiffer for La Buffana. We would leave a brandy glass for the Buffana, because Italians want to warm her up! “Dec. 25 is a big day,” my father would say.
