My sister and I were talking the other day about the various activities she is involved in as a care-giver, mother and wife. We both said “I don’t know how mom and dad did it!” It’s a juggling act: parenting a teen-ager, carrying for an elderly parent, keeping the family together, being a homeowner, paying bills and trying to carve out some time for a bit of solitude.
We get a hint in today’s Gospel that the apostles have an inkling of how demanding is the ministry of bringing the Good News to others and how many exhausting demands have been placed on Jesus by the crowds. They face the reality that being in mission wears them out.
Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, is always responding to the needs of others. Jesus teaches his disciples, and us, that caring relationships are at the heart of bringing his mission to completion. Take some time each day to pray and rest in God to regain your strength. Rest awhile in order to be filled up so that you can be poured out for the sake of others.
Take four minutes now and pray this video.
